One of the recurring symbols include animals, especially elephants. Tribal paintings often consist of a number of recurring motifs which at one glance would seem inconsequential but which, in fact, have symbolic values. These forms manifest themselves in various cultural activities for the indigenous people through which they worship their deities, ask forgiveness from them and depict oral stories passed down from their ancestors as a celebration of their sacred history. Numerous Indian tribes inhabit the villages of every corner of the country paying homage to nature and their agrarian way of living through these art forms. Tribal art forms, different from folk art in its inclusion of religion and sacred totems, form a large part of rural living. Even twenty years later, Gond and tribal paintings might have gained more recognition and found a niche in the current market, there’s a larger need to preserve these art forms from complete extinction and give a platform to these marginalised artists. His untimely death and the circumstances which led to it opened up a larger conversation about exploitation of Adivasi and minority artists. Due to circumstances unknown, he committed suicide in 2001 while staying as an art resident in Japan. In spite of his numerous awards and worldwide fame, Shyam still struggled with finding a market for his products and getting enough money to get by.
His use of bright colors and the coalescence of cultural Gond motifs with contemporary elements constitute the primary characteristics of Jangarh Kalam. Shyam was one of the first Gond artists to recreate traditional wall paintings with acrylics on paper. The brilliant Gond artist from Madhya Pradesh started his career under the guidance of mentor, Jagdish Swaminathan, who would then go on to collaborate with him on multiple art projects spanning across countries.
